Someone asked me recently on colors for the bedroom. The question is how does one select the most suitable color for the bedroom?

Do colors matter? Some practitioners think so while other not. Who are right?

Here is what I think.

Let’s take this someone whose most favorable element is wood. It would be good for him to live in a wooded area surrounded by trees and plants. It would also be good if his house face east or his bedroom is in the east sector with a window that gives him an eastern exposure.

By the same token would the color green which is one manifestation of the wood element benefit him?

Using the argument above, I would say yes. However, in my opinion, the contribution would be much smaller than facing east or living in a room with an eastern exposure.

Horses in general are cheerful, popular, quick-witted, magnetic and open-minded. They are also mentally and physically agile, talkative and changeable.

However they can be fickle, anxious, gullible, and lack stability and perseverance.

Those born under the sign of the snake are wise, mystic, graceful, soft-spoken, sensual, creative, prudent and shrewd. They are also ambitious, elegant, cautious and responsible with a sense of purpose.

However they can also be a loner, a bad communicator, possessive and distrustful.

In the Five Elements, water clash with fire.

The stove is a fire element item while the toilet is classified as water.

This is the reason while the stove should not directly face the door of a toilet. It is perfectly reasonable for the stove to face a wall that forms part of the toilet but never the door, especially if they are very close together, like in an apartment.

As a general guide, new items such as your new stove, new bed, brand new air conditioner unit etc can be moved in and installed prior to the designated auspicious move-in date.

However old stuff like your clothing, notebook computer, existing furniture etc should only go into the new house on the designated move-in date or later.

Normally I do not recommend colors unless my clients ask me specifically for it.

During a recent consultation, asked me to recommend the color for the living area. I suggested a like shade of pink or orange. She pulled out a color chart from a well known paint manufacturer and asked me which shade she should use.

Now I have to draw a line here. It would be safe to say that most Feng Shui consultants are not good with colors and design. Otherwise they would be Interior Designers instead.

Here is a tip from an Interior Designer friend of mine.

He said that if you are not sure which shade to use, you should buy a tester can and paint a small section of the wall (4 x 3 feet).

Look at the color over a few days before making a decision. Try another can and another wall if you are not sure.

According to him, the color on the wall can look ‘different’ from the color sample on the chart and this is the best way to get a feel before you make a decision.

A hill or higher ground behind a house is regarded as a favorable feature. The hill provides support and protection to the occupants and helps to retain ‘qi’.

However the hill should not be very steep and near. When it is too steep and too near, it is like a cliff and threatens the occupants of the house below.

Such steep hills are prone to landslides and if your house is too near, it could suffer damages or even destroyed in such an event.

Hill at the back is good but should not be steep or very near.

My house is located near a river. The developer filled and increased the level of our houses by approx 10 feet during the construction many years ago.

My neighbors on the other side of the river were not filled and are only slightly higher than the level of the river.

When it rains heavily or continuously, the level of the river rises and once in a while it overflows its banks and floods my neighbor’s houses (across the river).

While damages to properties are usually minimal, it causes the great deal of inconvenience to my neighbor’s across the river.

So, if you are planning to buy a house located near a river, it is wise to check if it floods.

Otherwise, you may end up complaining of bad Feng Shui!
